Community College Scholarships

Awarded by Lansdale AAUW since 2020

  • Purpose: To support nontraditional students we award* scholarships to students from the Community College of Philadelphia

    *The dollar amount awarded and number of students recognized varies from year to year depending on the funding available.

  • Requirements to apply for the award include:

    • Pell eligibility (indicating financial need)

    • A minimum GPA of 2.5

    • A recommendation from a faculty member or work supervisor

    • A response to an essay prompt

    • The student must be entering the second semester of their last year and have full time status at the college

  • Applications are available from the Office of Institutional Advancement, Community College of Philadelphia

    • The Higher Education Committee works in collaboration with CCP to choose scholarship recipients.

    • Winners are invited to and celebrated at the AAUW Lansdale May Banquet meeting.

  • Ongoing Support:

    • Any recipient of the Higher Education Scholarship may choose to make an email connection with a member of our branch who has something to offer her.

      • Some examples may include:

        • The suggestion of a helpful resource

        • An introduction to a person in the student’s major area of study

        • Encouraging words from an experienced woman who has “been there” (balancing school, work, and family obligations)

Higher Education Committee Attends
PA AAUW State Conference

  • Four members of the Higher Education Committee attended the PA AAUW State Conference in June 2022:

    • Karen Holmes, Amy Ryan Faga, Laurie Freidman, and Pam Schleif joined other attending members, Nancy Simon, Dot McLane, and Lee Wolfe.

  • The Committee presented a Power Point titled “Helping Nontraditional College Students Cross the Finish Line”.

  • Representatives from other Branches said they planned to incorporate some of the ideas into their own scholarship programs.

  • We were pleased to possibly inspire additional AAUW support for nontraditional students.

AAUW MISSION and DIVERSITY STATEMENT

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class. Membership is open to a graduate holding an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree from a qualified institution. Membership is not by invitation.
