Excellence in Writing

The Excellence in Writing Program

established by the Lansdale AAUW in 1980.

Purpose

  • Program is a creative writing contest whose goal is to recognize and encourage creative writing talent. It is open to local high school students, both girls and boys.

Process

  • Students submit a selection of creative writing, poetry or prose (max 1,500 words).

  • Entries are anonymized and evaluated by the Excellence in Writing committee.

  • Each submission is read and scored by a minimum of four committee members.

  • Scores are totaled, and the highest-ranked pieces are reviewed by the committee to select winners.

  • Typically, 300–400 entries are received annually, with 18–20 winners chosen.

Award Ceremony

  • An awards ceremony is held where winners receive a certificate of achievement and a small gift.

  • Students can read their winning selection if they desire.

Over the years we have received some outstanding entries that truly demonstrate the creative talent of these young people.
