STEM for Girls – Discover Your Future

Established by Lansdale AAUW in 1993 

Purpose 

  • "See It, to Be It": Inspire girls by exposing them to successful women currently working  in STEM, demonstrating real-world applications of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

  • Challenge and overturn stereotypes that suggest girls are less capable or uninterested in STEM.

  • Highlight the importance of STEM education in developing critical thinking skills for innovation and high-tech careers.

  • Address the gender gap in STEM careers and its impact on salary disparities as well as the fact that

Participants:

  • Girls (Grades 5–8): Engage in hands-on STEM workshops throughout the day.

  • Women in STEM Fields: Serve as workshop leaders and role models in Biology, Chemistry, Technology, Engineering, Physics, and Math.

  • Keynote Speaker: A successful woman in STEM who shares her journey, career insights, and motivational messages.

  • Parents (Free Optional Session): Enjoy the Keynote Speaker as well as a presentation of Montgomery County Community College programs


A Day of STEM

  • Keynote Speaker Session: 

    • Speaker shares her personal journey into STEM and what inspired her.

    • Explains her career in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

    • Encourages girls to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

  • A variety of interactive workshops for girls led by professional women in STEM who explain the principles of the experiments and share the various roles of women in their field.

  • Discovery Lab – short, walk-up activity stations for hands on exploration with knowledgeable guides.

  • Girls and workshop leaders complete a survey to provide feedback on their experience, helping the committee identify strengths and areas for improvement.

If less than half the population isn’t contributing to new ideas, we aren’t getting the best ideas!
