Women’s Project
The Women’s Project - "Women Helping Women"
Established by the Lansdale AAUW in 2000
Purpose:
Supporting disadvantaged women in local shelters and housing centers to foster self-development and encourage positive societal change.
History:
The initiative began with members donating reading materials, including recent magazines and paperback books, to five local centers. Many women in these centers have only the bare necessities, making a book or magazine a greatly valued luxury.
A survey was then conducted among both administrators and residents of the women’s centers to identify their most urgent needs and wish lists.
Practical necessities such as eyeglasses, medicine, school or daycare fees, paint, and car repairs were among the top requests. Other wishes were more personal, such as opportunities for family outings.
To further empower these women, we provide gift certificates for supermarkets, affordable retail stores, and restaurants. These allow them to make their own choices, promoting independence and self-esteem.
Our process to raise money to fund this program:
Branch members contribute clothing, jewelry, accessories, and household goods to a local consignment shop:
The West Main Consignment Shop
15 West Main Street, Lansdale, PA 19446
215-855-8533, www.westmainconsignment.com
Proceeds from the sale of these donated items go directly to the branch, enabling the purchase of essential goods and gift certificates for The Women’s Project to support women on their journey forward.
A simple act of kindness can mean a great deal.
