Write Read Write

The Write Read Write Program

Implemented by Lansdale Branch AAUW in 2002

Participants:

  • Students in one or two third grade classrooms at Marshall Street School in the Norristown Area School District.

Purpose:

  • To provide an opportunity for the students to develop and exercise their reading and writing skills through a meaningful activity.

Process

  • Students write introductory letters to their volunteer AAUW “buddies”.

  • Volunteer buddies respond with a letter about themselves and purchase a book that matches the student’s reading level and interests.

  • Students send thank you notes to their buddies.

  • AAUW Volunteers write final letters emphasizing the importance of reading and praising the students.

Celebration:

  • Volunteers attend a “Meet and Greet” towards the end of the school year to deliver the final letters along with healthy snacks, and have the opportunity to speak with the students.

  • Volunteers also donate gently used books as well as  Amazon gift cards to the teachers to purchase some books for the classroom library.
