Write Read Write
The Write Read Write Program
Implemented by Lansdale Branch AAUW in 2002
Participants:
Students in one or two third grade classrooms at Marshall Street School in the Norristown Area School District.
Purpose:
To provide an opportunity for the students to develop and exercise their reading and writing skills through a meaningful activity.
Process:
Students write introductory letters to their volunteer AAUW “buddies”.
Volunteer buddies respond with a letter about themselves and purchase a book that matches the student’s reading level and interests.
Students send thank you notes to their buddies.
AAUW Volunteers write final letters emphasizing the importance of reading and praising the students.
Celebration:
Volunteers attend a “Meet and Greet” towards the end of the school year to deliver the final letters along with healthy snacks, and have the opportunity to speak with the students.
Volunteers also donate gently used books as well as Amazon gift cards to the teachers to purchase some books for the classroom library.
